Madrid was founded in the 9th century by the Muslims under the name of Mayrit. It was later reconquered by the Christians in the 11th century and, after the arrival of the royal court of Felipe II in 1561, it began its expansion and development as the capital of Spain. Since then, Madrid has grown and transformed into a modern, cosmopolitan city with a rich history and culture.
